What do dietitians do?

Dietitians are professionals who have a science degree that qualifies them to treat a range of health conditions. They understand how nutrition affects the body and will give you expert nutrition and dietary advice that addresses any specific diagnoses that you may have. Dietitians will provide you with personal support to help you improve your health and wellbeing.

All Dietitians are also Nutritionists; however, a Nutritionist is not necessarily a Dietitian and may not be qualified to treat a specific medical condition that affects you. It is important to check the qualifications and experience of anyone you consider trusting with your body’s most vital input – food.

Our dietitians can support

  • Infants, children, adolescents and adults who require specialised nutritional assessment and programming.
  • Clients to reach a healthy weight through intuitive eating (non-diet approach),
  • Children to achieve great nutrition – especially fussy/picky eaters (read more about this below),
  • Digestive issues such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Coeliac Disease and constipation,
  • Allergies and intolerances,
  • Malnutrition,
  • Specific paediatric dietary issues,
  • Chronic diseases (e.g., diabetes, high cholesterol, chronic renal disease),
  • Wound healing.

Turning picky eaters into adventurous eaters

Picky Eaters cause stress for the whole family and you worry about your child’s nutritional intake. You have tried to get them to sample new foods, you have explained why they have to eat more foods, you have probably even begged – but you keep hitting a brick wall.

We see many picky eaters in our Greater Heights clinic. Our therapists understand the stress that families go through when a child is resistant to new foods. They understand the frustration that parents feel when their child wants to eat the same, limited range of foods every day. They see the desperation that comes when their child suddenly refuses to eat the one thing that gave them some nutritional value. That is why we developed the Feeding and Mealtime Clinic. The Greater Heights program is based on the best practice and evidence for picky eaters. It builds the skills, one at a time, so children become adventurous eaters.

What to do if you have a picky eater

The Greater Heights Feeding and Mealtime Clinic will get your child started on the road to more confident eating. The first step is an assessment which allows our multidisciplinary team to understand any physiological concerns, motor difficulties, or learned behaviours that are specific to your child. For some children, the progress to more confident eating is relatively straightforward. For other children, it can be complex and take much longer.
